Bundala National Park: The Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Located on the southern tip of the island, Bundala National Park is a breathtaking maze of waterways, lagoons, and golden dunes. While its neighbor, Yala, attracts those hunting for leopards, Bundala is the serene sanctuary for those who appreciate the delicate balance of wetland ecosystems. It is a land of vibrant pink plumage, ancient reptiles, and silent elephant wanderers. As Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar Wetland and a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it represents one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory birds in all of South Asia.

Experience Highlights

  • The Symphony of Greater Flamingos: Bundala is legendary for its visiting flocks of Greater Flamingos. During the peak season, the lagoons can be carpeted in a “pinkish threadbare carpet” as over 1,000 of these elegant birds arrive from the Rann of Kutch in India, creating a cacophony of sound and color.

  • A Global Birding Hub: With nearly 200 species of birds recorded, the park is a “who’s who” of the avian world. From the diminutive Bee-eater to the rare Black-necked Stork and the regal Crested Hawk Eagle, every turn of the safari jeep offers a new discovery for the binoculars.

  • The Coastline Elephants: While Bundala is bird-centric, it is home to a small, resident herd of elephants. There is a unique magic to seeing these giants silhouetted against the coastal sand dunes or wandering along the edge of a brackish lagoon at sunset.

  • Ancient Reptiles: The park is a stronghold for both Mugger Crocodiles and the massive Estuarine (Saltwater) Crocodiles. You can often see them basking on the banks of the five main lagoons—Bundala, Embilikala, Malala, Koholankala, and Lewaya.

  • Sea Turtle Nesting: The wild beaches bordering the park serve as a critical nesting ground for four of Sri Lanka’s five sea turtle species (Green, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Olive Ridley). Between October and January, witnessing these ancient mariners come ashore under the moonlight is an unforgettable experience.

Expert Note: A Message from Aleem

“Bundala is the perfect ‘antidote’ to the busier parks. Having lived in the UK for over 25 years, I know that many of our guests value peace and the chance to observe nature without a dozen other jeeps in the frame.

I often suggest Bundala as a half-day addition to a South Coast itinerary because its landscape—a mix of thorny scrub and shimmering salt pans—is so visually different from anywhere else on the island. In 2026, we continue to prioritize expert-led birding safaris here; our guides are trained to spot the rare migratory waders that others might miss. At Earth Trip, we time our visits for the late afternoon when the ‘golden hour’ light turns the dunes into glowing hills of bronze, providing the best possible conditions for our photography-loving guests.”

Earth Trip Favourite Fun Facts

  • The “Flying” Snake: Keep your eyes on the trees! Bundala is home to the endemic Sri Lankan Flying Snake. Don’t worry—it’s totally harmless and actually “glides” from branch to branch by flattening its body.

  • A Natural Shield: During the 2004 Tsunami, Bundala’s massive sand dunes acted as a natural barrier, protecting the inland ecosystem from significant damage—a testament to the power of coastal conservation.

  • Global Commuters: Some of the migratory birds you see in Bundala have traveled over 6,000 miles from Siberia to escape the northern winter, making the park a true international airport for wings.

  • Intelligent Parents: Local rangers often share stories of the park’s crocodiles; contrary to their “monster” reputation, they are highly social and are known to be some of the most dedicated parents in the reptile world.

The Earth Trip Experience

At Earth Trip, we curate your Bundala safari with a focus on “slow travel.” Aleem and our team ensure your jeep is equipped with cold water and high-quality binoculars, and we select drivers who understand the patience required for elite birdwatching.

Your journey is 100% protected through our Travel Trust Association (TTA) membership and comprehensive insurance. Our private transport network and dedicated fuel allocations ensure that your travel from Tangalle or Tissamaharama remains entirely seamless in 2026. We provide the security of a UK-based operator with the intimate, specialized knowledge of a local naturalist.

Visiting Hours & Best Time to Visit

  • Ideal Timing: We recommend a 6:00 AM start for the best bird activity, or a 3:30 PM safari for the most dramatic lighting and mammal sightings.

  • Best Season: For migratory birds (and the flamingos), the best window is between September and March.

  • What to Pack: A good telephoto lens for your camera, a hat, and a field guide to birds of Sri Lanka (though our guides carry these as well!).
