Mahajanga
Mahajanga, also known as Majunga, is a vibrant and historic port city located on the northwest coast of Madagascar at the mouth of the Betsiboka River. Often called the “City of Flowers,” it serves as the capital of the Boeny region and is one of the island’s most ethnically diverse locations. With its unique blend of Sakalava, Comorian, Indian, and Arab influences, Mahajanga offers a laid-back, cosmopolitan atmosphere that feels distinct from the central highlands.
Experience Highlights
The Giant Baobab & The Corniche The undeniable symbol of the city is Le Baobab de Majunga, an ancient African baobab with a massive circumference of over 20 metres. Located near the seafront, it has stood for centuries as a silent witness to the city’s history. In the evenings, the social heart of the city moves to The Corniche, a palm-lined promenade where locals and visitors gather to enjoy the sunset, sip fresh coconut milk, and sample street food like grilled skewers and samosas.
Geological Marvels: Cirque Rouge A short drive from the city lies the Cirque Rouge (Red Circus), a spectacular natural amphitheatre of eroded sandstone. The landscape is a mesmerizing palette of red, pink, and white sediments that create a moon-like terrain. Visiting at sunset is a highlight, as the shifting light intensifies the colours of the canyons, providing some of the most striking photographic opportunities in Western Madagascar.
Gateway to Adventure Mahajanga is the perfect base for exploring the wilder side of the Boeny region. From here, you can journey to the Anjohibe Caves to discover massive limestone chambers and natural underground swimming pools. For those drawn to the water, boat trips through Bombetoka Bay offer a chance to explore vast mangrove forests and spot rare bird species, including the Sacred Ibis.
Wildlife & Nature
The region surrounding Mahajanga is a sanctuary for biodiversity, particularly in its dry deciduous forests.
-
Ankarafantsika National Park: Located a few hours inland, this park is home to eight species of lemurs, including the “dancing” Coquerel’s Sifaka, and over 120 species of birds.
-
Coastal Giants: If you visit during the month of August, you have an incredible chance to see humpback whales breaching off the coast of Antsanitia.
-
Sacred Lake (Lac Sacré): Near the city, this peaceful freshwater lake is home to resident crocodiles that are revered and protected by the local community through ancient traditions.
Climate & Best Time to Visit
Mahajanga enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, but the seasons dictate the best experiences:
-
April to November: The dry season is ideal for exploring the caves and national parks, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies.
-
August: This is the peak month for whale watching and enjoying the lively atmosphere of the city during the local holiday season.
