A Colourful Port City

Majunga is a port city of the Boeny region in the North West of Madagascar. At the heart of the city, stop in front of the huge baobab tree that is one of the largest on the island. With its large Comoran and Indian populations, and historical connections with Africa, it is one of the most colourful and ethnically diverse places in Madagascar. It is also the gateway to one of western Madagascar’s most diverse regions, from stunning caves and rock formations to sacred lakes and bird-rich wetlands. You can walk along the beaches near Majunga sipping coconut milk. During the month of August, you have the best chance to see the incredible whales off Antsanitia.

Mahajanga, also known as Majunga, is a vibrant and historic city on the northwest coast of Madagascar. Nicknamed the “City of Flowers,” it is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, beautiful coastline, and as a gateway to stunning geological and natural wonders.

Here is a summary of what makes Mahajanga a unique destination:

1. The City Center and Cultural Life

Mahajanga is a melting pot of cultures, including Malagasy (Sakalava ethnic group), Arab, Indian, and Comorian influences, which gives the city a distinct, laid-back charm.

  • Le Baobab de Majunga (The Giant Baobab): This iconic, ancient African baobab is the symbol of the city and a must-see landmark on the seafront. Its circumference is over 20 meters (66 feet).
  • The Corniche (Bord de la Mer): This palm-lined seaside promenade is the heart of the city’s social life, especially in the evening. Locals and visitors gather here to enjoy the sunset, eat street food (like grilled skewers and samosas), and soak in the lively atmosphere.
  • Bazar-Be and Markets: Explore the city’s main markets to see the blend of cultures firsthand, with spices, colorful fabrics, and local crafts reflecting its history as a major trading port.
  • Colonial Architecture: The old quarter near the harbor still displays remnants of 18th-century Arabian trading posts and beautiful colonial-era houses.

2. Natural and Geological Wonders

Mahajanga is a popular starting point for exploring some of Madagascar’s most spectacular natural sites.

  • Cirque Rouge (Red Circus): Located a short drive outside the city, this is a spectacular natural amphitheater of eroded sandstone. The different layers of red, pink, and white sediment create a mesmerizing, moon-like landscape, especially stunning at sunset.
  • Ankarafantsika National Park: A few hours inland, this park is a haven for biodiversity in the dry deciduous forest. It’s home to eight species of lemurs, including the famous Coquerel’s Sifaka, as well as over 120 species of birds.
  • Anjohibe Caves: For the adventurous, a trip to these massive limestone cave systems offers an opportunity to explore underground tunnels, chambers, and natural swimming pools with waterfalls.
  • Bombetoka Bay & Betsiboka River: Mahajanga sits at the mouth of the massive Betsiboka River, which flows into Bombetoka Bay. Boat trips here allow you to explore the vast mangroves and see numerous bird species, including the Sacred Ibis.

3. Beaches and Relaxation

The city itself has beaches, but the most picturesque are slightly outside the main area.

  • Antsanitia Beach: Located about 20 km north, this beach is often cited as the most beautiful in the region, offering golden sand, palm trees, and calm waters ideal for swimming.
  • Village Touristique: A popular beach area with facilities for relaxation.
  • Lac Sacré (Sacred Lake): A peaceful freshwater lake near the city where the resident crocodiles are protected and revered by the local community. Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of its spiritual importance.

4. History and Significance

Mahajanga has a rich past, having been the capital of the Sakalava Kingdom of Boina in the 18th century. Its strategic location made it a key port for trade between Madagascar, the African mainland, and the Middle East, leading to its current cosmopolitan character.
