Wildlife lovers are in for a true spectacle in the Wild South, where you can track elusive leopards in Yala National Park before winding down within the historic, cobblestoned charm of Galle Fort. If you prefer the serene call of the ocean, the East Coast offers absolute paradise with the vibrant coral reefs of Pigeon Island National Park and the spiritual majesty of the Trincomalee and Koneswaram Temple. By choosing Earth Trip for your Sri Lanka bespoke holidays, you are partnering with specialists who provide seamless, private tours that celebrate ethical travel and true, authentic discovery. Let us show you the real Sri Lanka—the one that captured our hearts and will surely capture yours.

1. Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Standing at the top of Sigiriya is an absolute highlight of my travels. Climbing the 5th-century “Lion Rock” takes some effort, but the panoramic views from the summit are breath-taking. I always recommend getting here early to beat the heat. Seeing the ancient frescoes and the remnants of King Kashyapa’s sky palace really makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. It is a must-visit, which is why we include it in our Sri Lanka Classic – Summer Holidays and our Sri Lanka Family Holiday.

2. Dambulla Cave Temple

Every time I walk into these caves, I am struck by the sheer scale of the history preserved inside. With five massive caverns filled with 150 life-size Buddha statues and intricate, ancient murals, it is a profoundly moving spiritual site. It is genuinely one of the most evocative archaeological spots on the island. We often feature this in our Sri Lanka Classic Holiday Highlights.

3. Minneriya National Park

Watching “The Gathering” of wild elephant herds here is a spectacle that never gets old. I remember the first time I saw hundreds of elephants congregating around the ancient reservoirs during the dry season; it is a raw, natural phenomenon that stays with you. It is a key stop on our Northern Sri Lanka Jaffna Holiday Discovery.

4. Polonnaruwa Ancient City

I love exploring Polonnaruwa on a bicycle. It is a perfectly planned ancient capital, and wandering between the stupas, temples, and palaces feels like a peaceful journey through history. The blend of Singhalese and Indian architecture is stunning. You can discover this history on our Northern Sri Lanka Jaffna Holiday Discovery.

5. Ella & Little Adam’s Peak

There is nothing quite like hiking through the lush tea estates in Ella. Reaching the top of Little Adam’s Peak at sunrise, with the entire valley bathed in soft light, is one of my favourite experiences in the hill country. It is such a rewarding, manageable climb that offers some of the best views in the country, featured in our Sri Lanka Classic – Summer Holidays.

6. Nuwara Eliya

Known as “Little England,” Nuwara Eliya offers such a unique atmosphere. I love the crisp mountain air and the colonial charm of the bungalows set amongst vibrant tea plantations and the stunning Gregory Lake. It is the perfect place to recharge, which is why it is part of our Sri Lanka Family Holiday.

7. Yala National Park

I have spent countless hours in private 4x4s in Yala, and the thrill of tracking a leopard never fades. It is world-renowned for a reason, and if you are a wildlife photographer, this is your bucket-list destination. Beyond the leopards, spotting sloth bears and crocodiles is always a highlight of our Sri Lanka Classic Holiday Highlights.

8. Galle Fort

Wandering the cobblestone streets of Galle Fort is one of my favourite things to do. The 17th-century ramparts and the blend of colonial architecture with a modern, vibrant arts scene make it feel like time has stood still. It is a must-see for anyone on our Sri Lanka Family Holiday.

8. Pigeon Island National Park

If you love the water, Pigeon Island is incredible. I have spent time here snorkelling and exploring the vibrant coral reefs; seeing Blacktip Reef Sharks and Hawksbill Turtles in their natural environment is unforgettable. Experience it on our Northern Sri Lanka Jaffna Holiday Discovery.

9. Trincomalee & Koneswaram Temple

Visiting Koneswaram Temple, perched dramatically on Swami Rock, is a powerful experience. The views over one of the world’s greatest natural harbours are spectacular. It is a deep, cultural highlight of our Northern Sri Lanka Jaffna Holiday Discovery.

10. Pasikuda & Kalkudah Beaches

These golden stretches of sand are my top recommendation for the UK summer months. The waters are calm, turquoise, and perfect for swimming. I always tell my guests that this is where you go for pure serenity.

11. South & Southwest Beaches

When winter hits the UK, I head to the southwest coast. Tangalle and Bentota are at their absolute best during these months, offering the perfect conditions for surfing and soaking up the sun.

12. Sinharaja Rainforest

This is a true birdwatcher’s paradise and a UNESCO site that I think is vastly underrated. The biodiversity here is staggering, and it is the best place to find endemic species that you simply won’t see anywhere else.

13. Whale Watching

Being out on the Indian Ocean and seeing giant blue whales surface is a humbling experience. I have done this off both the south and east coasts, and it is always a highlight of a well-timed trip.

14. Nocturnal Wildlife (Loris)

Spotting a slender loris at night is such a magical, quiet experience. Their big, expressive eyes in the dark forest are unforgettable, and our specialists love taking guests out to see these shy, nocturnal creatures.

15. Ceylon Tea Plantations

Learning about the art of tea production in these plantations has given me a new appreciation for my morning cup. The process is delicate and fascinating, and tasting fresh tea directly from the source is an absolute treat.

16. Boutique Sanctuary Stays

I am incredibly particular about where I stay. We only choose boutique properties—from colonial manors to luxury safari camps—that offer a genuine “sense of place.” To me, the hotel is as much a part of the adventure as the sights themselves.

17. Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is a true hidden gem that I absolutely love. It is famous for its “villus,” or natural lakes, which provide a beautiful backdrop for tracking leopards and sloth bears away from the main tourist crowds. It feels much more wild and remote, featured in our Northern Sri Lanka Jaffna Holiday Discovery.
