Chena Huts by Uga: Where the Wild Meets the Waves

Hidden amongst the sand dunes and scrub forest of Sri Lanka’s deep south, Chena Huts by Uga is an architectural tribute to the island’s heritage. The name is inspired by traditional ‘chena’ farming, where villagers slept in simple huts to protect their crops from elephants. Today, that concept has been transformed into one of the most prestigious all-inclusive safari lodges in Asia. Situated on a seven-acre estate where the tropical jungle meets the Indian Ocean, this resort offers a rare opportunity to watch elephants wander the beach by day and leopards prowl the nearby park by dawn.

Chena Huts by Uga, Yala: Ultra-Luxury Safari Experience Reviewed by Earth Trip

At Earth Trip, we inspect every boutique property, safari lodge, and resort we recommend to ensure it meets our standards for family travel and luxury hospitality.

At the end of July 2026, Earth Trip Directors Izabela and Aleem visited Chena Huts by Uga with their family. Nestled between the coastal jungle and the Indian Ocean in Yala, Chena Huts continues to set the benchmark for luxury wildlife retreats in Sri Lanka.

Arrival & Jungle Surroundings

Our welcome to Chena Huts set the tone for an immersive wilderness stay. As we arrived, wild monkeys were swinging through the tree canopy right above the reception area, providing an immediate, authentic connection to Yala’s nature.

Despite being an ultra-luxury lodge, the atmosphere remains peaceful, calm, and intimately tied to its natural surroundings.

Private Cabins & Pool Features

Accommodation at Chena Huts consists of spacious, freestanding private cabins designed with a blend of safari elegance and coastal aesthetic.

  • Private Plunge Pools: Every individual cabin includes its own private plunge pool on a private deck, which was a major highlight for cooling off during the afternoons.
  • Main Resort Swimming Pool: In addition to the private pools, the property features a serene main swimming pool set in the heart of the estate, perfect for swimming together as a family.

Family-Friendly Safaris & Wildlife Sightings

One of the stand-out inclusions at Chena Huts is that guided safari game drives in Yala National Park are included directly in the stay rate.

Our family safari was exceptional and very accommodating for children. Guided by expert rangers, our game drive brought us up close with Sri Lanka’s wildlife, including sightings of:

  • Wild Elephants roaming the scrub forest
  • Crocodiles resting near the water holes
  • Water Buffaloes wallowing in the wetlands

Exceptional Dining & Beverages

The culinary experience at Chena Huts was outstanding. The kitchen delivers high-quality international and Sri Lankan dishes, accompanied by an impressive selection of drinks and craft cocktails. From curated breakfast dishes to gourmet dinners, every meal reflected top-tier culinary standards.

Upcoming Refurbishment & Enhancements (September 2026)

During our visit, the resort team shared exciting news regarding upcoming enhancements to the property.

Chena Huts will temporarily close starting in September 2026 to undergo an extensive renovation. These upgrades will feature:

  • A brand-new, expanded restaurant area designed to offer a broader culinary setting.
  • A larger, redesigned bar area to enhance sunset cocktails and social spaces.
  • Elevated architectural design touches across the public spaces to further enhance the guest experience.

The Earth Trip Verdict

“Chena Huts by Uga delivers a rare combination of absolute luxury, incredible dining, and world-class wildlife encounters. Having guided safaris included in the stay makes it an effortless and thrilling experience for families.”

Earth Trip Opinion

Chena Huts is, quite simply, the gold standard for luxury wildlife travel in Sri Lanka. We love how the resort manages to feel like a sophisticated safari camp without sacrificing a single modern comfort. • Water Management: The property operates its own desalination and seawater treatment plants, ensuring it does not deplete local freshwater sources.

  • Wildlife Protection: The resort follows strict Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) guidelines, employing expert rangers who advocate for ethical wildlife viewing and conservation research.

  • Renewable Energy: The resort utilizes solar power and biogas units, while 100% LED lighting and motion sensors further reduce the carbon footprint.
